Cottanello

Cottanello is the small Sabine village from whose quarries the homonymous, famous red marble that adorns the most important churches in Rome, was extracted. Thanks to the hermitage of San Cataldo, carved into the rock, the pastures of its highlands and the olive trees of its hills, it represents an ideal destination for tourists looking for peace and beauty.

Where is it?

Cottanello, embraced by medieval walls, stands out on a 550 m. hill overlooking the Imelle valley that offers an amazing view over the distant Monte Soratte. The village, inhabited by 559 peropel, is located 23 km. away from Rieti; and can be reached through the provincial road that, after crossing the Fonte Cerro Pass, leads towards the village, winding amidst dense woods before getting to the spectacular view of the Hermitage of San Cataldo, nestled in the rock on one side and almost opposite the lonely profile of Cottanello.

Its origins?

The name Cottanello derives from an important branch of the Aurelia gens, the Aurelii Cottae, who seem to have descended from King Numa Pompilius and who served Rome with prominent figures in political and military life, from the 3rd century BC to the 1st AD. The first Cottanello was first mentioned in 1027, when the Lombard Susanna, daughter of Landulf and Taxia, and wife of Attone Count Sabino, ceded it to the Monastery of Farfa for the remission of sins. Francis of Assisi also passed through Cottanello, around 1217: according to Franciscan sources this was the place where St. Francis made the double miracle of taming the packs of wolves that infested the area and of putting an end to the hail that ruined the crops. In 1283, the inhabitants of Cottanello entrusted the perpetual control of the castle to the leader Orso, of the Orsini family, whose dominion lasted over the centuries. In the Baroque age, Cottanello marble, also known as Persian stone extracted in the quarries of Monte Lacerone, became very famous. The use of Cottanello marble in Rome was documented for the first time in 1648 in the Fabbrica di San Pietro, the Roman shipyard par excellence, where artists such as Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini had worked. Cottanello always remained faithful to the Papacy, so much that it turned against the invading Napoleonic troops. During this period, the rule of the Orsini family also ceased and Cottanello passed directly to the Apostolic Chamber. The village, destroyed by the wars, was slowly rebuilt and the population, living in a state of total abandonment, in the shadow of the few wealthy families owning land and livestock, slowly recovered. In 1860 Cottanello voted unanimously for the acceptance of the Kingdom of Italy.

What to see?

The best way to visit and appreciate the historic center of Cottanello is taking a stroll among its well preserved alleys that follows the structure of the castrum. This was characterized by the double concentric walls and an interstitial space for the patrol walkway. Visitors can have access to the village through the north gate, which is called the Kingdom Gate for being oriented towards the then Kingdom of Naples. The Church of San Luigi is on the left, right next to the gate, while on the right stands the Palace housing the Rinaldi Institute, bequeathed by Lucia Rinaldi, who  donated her house to the municipality of Cottanello with the pact that it would be used for the education of the girls of the village. Today it is used for exhibitions and conferences. At the top of the steep climb, to the right of the Institute, is an arcade with two characteristic windows, after which, through Via del Corridoio you can reach The Baronial House, the ancient palace of the Orsini family. The southern gate, known as Porta Romana (Roman Gate), is closed by a well-preserved tower and probably represented the main access to the village. We suggest to visit the characteristic Hermitage of San Cataldo located just outside the village, where you can admire an enthroned Christ flanked by apostles and worshipers, dating back to the late 12th century and discovered by chance in 1949.
